Thick and Toasty Pumpkin Patch Beanie

This beanie is made using Loops and Thread Charisma tweed yarn in White, Bernat Softee Chunky yarn in Pumpkin, and Red Heart Soft Essentials in Cocoa.

Celebrate FALL and brighten up someone’s day with this cute and cozy beanie! Pumpkins are made using Granny stitches and stems with half double crochet stitches. The length of the beanie can be adjusted to create a slouch effect, if desired. I get my pompoms from Amazon.com!

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

hdc – half double crochet

granny stitch – 3 double crochet in the same space

sk st – skip stitch 

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

YO – yarn over

Using size 5 yarn (bulky) with a L-11 (8 mm) needle, this pattern makes a large beanie (18-19 inch circumference and 9 inch high for basic and 11 inch high for slouch). This pattern utilizes three different colors of yarn – a white tweed, orange, and brown.

Starting with WHITE, Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring. String the pompom through the yarn along the way.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (48 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc (48 dc)

Row 6 – ch 2 (this counts as your first hdc of this row), hdc in each st all the way around, using BROWN yarn for every third stitch.  Join with sl st to first dc (48 hdc)

Row 7 – in ORANGE – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), sk 1 st, 3 dc in the next st (granny stitch), sk 2 st, then {granny stitch in the next st, sk 2 st} all the way around, aligning the granny stitch to the brown hdc in the row below.  Join with sl st to first dc (48 stitches)

Row 8 – in WHITE – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc (48 dc)

Row 9-14 – repeat Rows 6-8 once for BASIC (9 inch tall) or twice for SLOUCH (11 inches tall) (48 stitches)

Row 12 for BASIC and Row 15 for SLOUCH – in WHITE – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc (48 dc)

Row 13 for BASIC and Row 16 for SLOUCH – in WHITE – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first sc and fasten off
