Thick and Toasty Spike Stitch Beanie

This beanie is made with Lion Brand Wool Ease River Run

This beanie is made with rows of spike stitches in the body of the hat.

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

ldc  – long double crochet 

sk st – skip stitch 

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

Using size 6 yarn (super bulky) with a N-15 (10 mm) needle to make a large beanie (18-19 inch circumference and 9 inch high)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 9 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (9 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (18 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (27 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (36 dc)

Row 5 –  ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next stitch, ch 1 and skip the st below, then {dc in the next three stitches, ch 1 and skip the st below} to the end.  Join with sl st to the first dc.   (36 stitches)

Row 6 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in next st, ldc into sk st in the row below, dc in the next st, skip next stitch, then {dc in next st, ldc into sk st in the row below, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to the first dc.   (36 stitches)

Row 7 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next st, ch1 and sk st, dc in the next st, ldc in the next st, the repeat {dc in the next st, ch1 and sk st, dc in the next st, ldc in the next st} all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (36 stitches)

Row 8-9 – repeat rows 6, 7 (36 stitches)

Row 10 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next three stitches, ldc into the sk st in the row below, then {dc in the next three stitches, ldc in the sk st in the row below} to the end.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (36 stitches)

Row 11 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each stitch of the row below to the end.  Join with sl st to the first dc. (36 dc)

Row 12 – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first sc and fasten off (36 sc)
