Smooth and Shiny Spike Stitch Band Beanie

This beanie is made with Caron Simply Soft yarn in Pagoda and Lion Brand basic stitch yarn in Two Pines


This beanie is made with a band of spike stitches at the center of the beanie.

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet 

ldc – long double crochet 

sk st – skip stitch

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

Hat Sizes:

X-small – 8” long and 17” flat circumference

Small – 8” long and 18” flat circumference

Medium – 8.5” long and 19” flat circumference

Large – 8.5” long and 20” flat circumference

Using size 4 yarn (worsted or medium weight yarn) with a K-10.5 (6.5 mm) needle.  

Follow sizing by order in parentheses – (x-small, small, medium, large)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 (12,13,14)  dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12,13,14,15 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24, 26, 28, 30 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36, 39, 42, 45 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 6 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 7 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next st, ch 1 and sk st, then repeat {dc in the next 3 st, ch 1 and sk st} all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 8 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next st, ldc in the next st, dc in the next st, ch 1 and sk st, then repeat {dc in the next st, ldc in the next st, dc in the next st, ch 1 and sk st} all the way around to the end.   Join with sl st to first dc.  (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 9 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next st, ch1 and sk st, dc in the next st, ldc in the next st, the repeat {dc in the next st, ch1 and sk st, dc in the next st, ldc in the next st} all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Rows 10-11 – repeat Rows 7 and 8  (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 12 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next st, ldc in the next st, dc in the next 3 st, the repeat {ldc in the next st, dc in the next 3 st} all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc.    (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 13-15 (for XS and S) or Row 13-16 (for M and L) – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 16 (for XS and S) or Row 17 (for M and L)  – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with st to the first sc and fasten off.  (48, 52, 56, 60 sc)

Want to have your band stand out in a different color?  Use a different colored yarn for Rows 8-11.
