Elephant Beanie

This beanie is. made with Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Grey Heather and Pink.

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

Using size 4 yarn (worsted or medium weight yarn) with a J-10 (6.0 mm) needle 

BEANIE (6.5” high and 15” flat diameter)

Using BLUE or GRAY colored yarn, Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 3 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next st dc in the next 3 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (44 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (44 dc)

Row 6-10 – repeat row 5  (44 dc)

Row 11 – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with st to the first sc and fasten off.  (44 dc)

INNER EAR (make 2)

Using PINK colored yarn, Ch 15

Row 1 – counting the first 2 ch as your first dc, dc in to the fourth dc from the hook, dc into each ch all the way across.  TURN for the next row.  (13 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first sc), skip 2 stitches, 5 dc into the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, sc in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in the nest stitch, skip 2 stitches, sc in the next stitch.  Fasten off.  (13 stitch spaces)

OUTER EAR (make 2)

Using BLUE or GRAY colored yarn (to match the main beanie color), Ch 15

Row 1 – counting the first 2 ch as your first dc, dc in to the fourth dc from the hook, dc into each ch all the way across.  TURN for the next row.  (13 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first sc), skip 2 stitches, 5 dc into the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, sc in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in the nest stitch, skip 2 stitches, sc in the next stitch.  (13 stitch spaces)

Row 3 – Join the Inner and Outer ears together by crocheting sc all the way around both pieces to form one piece.  Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. 

TRUNK (make 1)

Using BLUE or GRAY colored yarn (to match the main beanie color), Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 –  ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 3 dc into the magic ring.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (4 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 2 dc into the next st, 1 dc into the next st, 2 dc in the next st.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (6 dc)

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), dc into each st.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (6 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), dc into same st as joining, 2 dc into each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (12 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 2 dc into the next st, then {1 dc into the next st, 2 dc into the next st} all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc.  Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.  (18 dc)

Putting it together:

  • Sew EARS symmetrically over Rows 3-7, with INNER EAR facing forward.
  • Sew TRUNK at center of the beane, equidistant from each EAR, between Rows 6-10
  • Puffy paint eyes at Row 5, symmetrically above the top of the trunk.
