Raccoon Beanie

This beanie is made with Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Grey Heather, Black, and White.

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

hdc – half double crochet

sk st – skip stitch

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

Using size 4 yarn (worsted or medium weight yarn) with a J-10 (6.0 mm) needle 

BEANIE (6.5” high and 15” flat diameter)

Using GRAY colored yarn, Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 3 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next st dc in the next 3 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (44 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (44 dc)

Row 6-10 – repeat row 5  (44 dc)

Row 11 – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with st to the first sc and fasten off.  (44 dc)

EAR (make 2)

Using GRAY colored yarn, Ch 4 and loop to make a ring

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), 7 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (8 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (16 dc)

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, and then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (20 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc.  Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.  (20 dc)

OUTER EYE (make 2)

Using WHITE colored yarn, ch 4 and loop to make a ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), 6 dc into the ring.  (7 dc)  TURN for the next row.  

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next 2 st, 7 dc in the next st, dc in the next 3 st.  (9 dc)  TURN for the next row.

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next 5 st, 7 dc in the next st, dc in the next 6 st.  (19 dc)  TURN for the next row

Row 4 – ch 1 and sc in the same st as joining, ch 4 and skip 1 st, sc in the next st, and then repeat {ch 4, sk 1 st, sc in the next st} 3 more times and then sc in each st all the way around.  Fasten off and leave long tail for sewing.

INNER EYE (make 2)

Using WHITE colored yarn, Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 –  ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 11 dc into the magic ring.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (12 dc)

Row 2 – change to BLACK yarn, ch 2 (this counts as the first sc of this row), sc in the next 5 st, 2 sc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next 4 st, 2 sc in the next st.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.  (18 st)

NOSE (make 1)

Using BLACK colored yarn, Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc.  Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.   (12 dc)

Putting it together:

  • Sew EARS symmetrically over Rows 3-5
  • Sew both INNER EYE onto the OUTER EYE as desired.  Then sew the finished EYES over Rows 6-10, with free chain edges facing out and pointy edges facing center.
  • Sew NOSE between Rows 9-10 at where pointy edge of EYES meet.
  • Puffy paint eyes at center of the eye
