Whale Beanie

This beanie was made with Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Country Blue and Aruba Sea

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

2dctog – YO, insert hook into first st, YO and pull through one loop, YO and pull through 2 loops, YO, insert hook into the next st, YO and pull through 2 loops, YO, and pull through the remaining 3 loops on the hook

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

Using size 4 yarn (worsted or medium weight yarn) with a J-10 (6.0 mm) needle in BLUE  (or color of your choice)

BEANIE (6.5” high and 15” flat diameter)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 3 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next st dc in the next 3 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (44 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (44 dc)

Row 6-10 – repeat row 5  (44 dc)

Row 11 – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with st to the first sc and fasten off.  (44 sc)

SIDE FINS (Make 2) 

Using BLUE yarn, ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this round) and then 5 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (6 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (12 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (18 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc.  (18 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row, 2dctog over next 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next stitch, then repeat {2dctog over next 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next stitch} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.  (12 dc)

TAIL FIN 

Make 2 of the following:

Using BLUE yarn, ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this round) and then 3 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (4 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (6 dc)

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (9 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc.  (9 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row, 2dctog over next 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next stitch, then repeat {2dctog over next 2 stitches, 1 dc in the next stitch} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc.  Fasten off one tail fin only  (6 dc)

Joining the two TAIL FINS together:

Row 6 – Join last st of unfastened tail fin to the first st of the fasted off tail fin, then ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.  (12 dc)

Putting it together:

  • Make pom pom with LIGHT BLUE yarn, using 30 strands of 3 inch pieces of yarn.  Sew to top of the beanie
  • Sew Side fins symmetrically on each side between Rows 6-7
  • Sew Tail fin at the back of the beanie between Rows 6-7
