Smooth and Shiny Granny Stitch on the Throne Beanie (aka, the Gracie beanie)

This beanie is made with Caron Simply Soft in Snapdragon

This beanie is made with stitches of a granny square sitting on top of a chain “throne” in the body of the hat.  My friend Gracie’s nickname was “the Queen”, so this beanie is also known as the “Gracie Beanie” in her honor.

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

granny stitch – 3 double crochet in the same space

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

Hat Sizes:

X-small – 8” long and 17” flat circumference

Small – 8” long and 18” flat circumference

Medium – 8.5” long and 19” flat circumference

Large – 8.5” long and 20” flat circumference

Using size 4 yarn (worsted or medium weight yarn) with a K-10.5 (6.5 mm) needle.  

Follow sizing by color – x-small, small, medium, large

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 (12,13,14)  dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12,13,14,15 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24, 26, 28, 30 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36, 39, 42, 45 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the next stitch and all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc. (48, 52, 56, 60 hdc)

Row 6 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), sk 1 stitch, granny stitch in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, granny stitch in the next stitch, then {skip 2 stitches, granny stitch in the next stitch} all the way around  (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 7 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), sk 2 stitch and dc in next stitch, ch 2 and then dc in the first skipped dc, then repeat {sk 2 stitch, dc in the next stitch, ch 2, and then dc in the first skipped dc} all the way around.   (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 8 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), then {granny stitch in each ch 2 space in the row below} all the way around (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 9 – 14 for XS and S and to Row 16 for M and L – repeat Row 7 and 8   (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 15 (for XS and S) and Row 17 (for M and L) – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc  (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 16 (for XS and S) and Row 18 (for M and L) – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first sc and fasten off   (48, 52, 56, 60 sc)
