Smooth and Shiny Hourglass Granny Stitch Beanie – thick

These beanies are made with Red heart Soft Essentials yarn in Turquoise (left) and Greyhound (right)

This beanie is made with rows of granny square stitches in the body of the hat, rightside up and upside down, creating the shape of an hourglass.

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

granny stitch – 3 double crochet in the same space

3dctog – crochet 3 double stitches together 

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

Hat Sizes:

Small – 8” long and 18” flat circumference

Medium – 8.5” long and 19” flat circumference

Large – 8.5” long and 20” flat circumference

Using size 5 yarn (bulky yarn) with a L-11 (8 mm) needle.  

Follow sizing by color – small, medium, large

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 9,(10,11)  dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (10,11,12 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (20, 22, 24 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (30, 33, 36 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (40, 44, 48 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (40, 44, 48 dc)

Row 6 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), sk 1 stitch, granny stitch in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, granny stitch in the next stitch, then {skip 2 stitches, granny stitch in the next stitch} all the way around  (40, 44, 48 dc)

Row 7 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), 3dctog over the granny stitch in row below, ch 2, then repeat {3dctog over the granny stitch in row below, ch 2} all the way around  (40, 44, 48 dc)

Row 8 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), then {granny stitch at the center of each 3dctog cluster in row below} all the way around  (40, 44, 48 dc)

Row 9 – 12 –  repeat Row 7 and 8 (40, 44, 48 stitches)

Row 13 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc (40, 44, 48 dc)

Row 14 – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first sc and fasten off (40, 44, 48 sc)
