Smooth and Shiny Hourglass Granny Stitch Beanie

This beanie is made with Lion Brand Heartland yarn in Yellowstone

This beanie is made with rows granny square stitches in the body of the hat, alternating rightside up and upside down, to create an hourglass shape

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

granny stitch – 3 double crochet in the same space

3dctog – crochet 3 double stitches together 

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

Hat Sizes:

X-small – 8” long and 17” flat circumference

Small – 8” long and 18” flat circumference

Medium – 8.5” long and 19” flat circumference

Large – 8.5” long and 20” flat circumference

Using size 4 yarn (worsted or medium weight yarn) with a K-10.5 (6.5 mm) needle.  

Follow sizing by color – x-small, small, medium, large

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 (12,13,14)  dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12,13,14,15 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24, 26, 28, 30 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36, 39, 42, 45 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 6 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), sk 1 stitch, granny stitch in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, granny stitch in the next stitch, then {skip 2 stitches, granny stitch in the next stitch} all the way around  (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 7 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), 3dctog over the granny stitch in row below, ch 2, then repeat {3dctog over the granny stitch in row below, ch 2} all the way around  (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 8 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), then {granny stitch at the center of each 3dctog cluster in row below} all the way around  (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 9 – 12 for XS and S and to Row 13 for M and L – repeat Row 7 and 8 for XS and S and then repeat Row 7 one more time for M and L.   (48, 52, 56, 60 stitches)

Row 13 (for XS and S) and Row 14 (for M and L) ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc (48, 52, 56, 60 dc)

Row 14 (for XS and S) and Row 15 (for M and L) – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to first sc and fasten off (48, 52, 56, 60 sc)

TIP:  Have extra spaces due to sizing?  Fill them with dc in each space.  Just make sure you keep the total number of stitches consistent for each round to maintain sizing.
