Dinosaur Beanie

Using size 4 yarn (worsted or medium weight yarn) with a J-10 (6.0 mm) needle in DARK GREEN

BEANIE (6.5” high and 15” flat diameter)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36 dc)

Row 4 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 3 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next st dc in the next 3 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (44 dc)

Row 5 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (44 dc)

Row 6-10 – repeat row 5  (44 dc)

Row 11 – ch 1 (this counts as your first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with st to the first sc and fasten off.  (44 dc)

SMALL SPOTS (make 2 in LIGHT GREEN)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as the first sc in this row), 5 sc in the ring.  Join with sl st to first sc, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.  (6 sc)

MEDIUM SPOTS (make 2 in LIGHT GREEN)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as the first hdc in this row), 7 hdc in the ring.  Join with sl st to first hdc, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.  (8 hdc)

LARGE SPOTS (make 2 in LIGHT GREEN)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.  (10 dc)

EXTRA SMALL SPIKE (make 1 in LIGHT ORANGE and 1 in DARK ORANGE)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 5 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (6 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in the next st and each st all the way around, fasten off, leaving long strand for sewing. (12 dc)

SMALL SPIKE (make 1 in LIGHT ORANGE and 1 in DARK ORANGE)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 7 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (8 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the  next st, dc in the next st} all the way around, fasten off, leaving long strand for sewing.  (12 dc)

MEDIUM SPIKE (make 2 in LIGHT ORANGE and 2 in DARK ORANGE)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 9 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (10 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} all the way around, fasten off, leaving long strand for sewing. (14 dc)

LARGE SPIKE  (make 1 in LIGHT ORANGE and 1 in DARK ORANGE)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (12 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 2 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 st} all the way around, fasten off, leaving long strand for sewing. (16 dc)

Putting it together:

• FOLD BEANIE FLAT, designating the RIGHT end as FRONT of the beanie and the LEFT end as BACK of the beanie
• Sew SPIKES over the CROWN of the beanie, alternating DARK and LIGHT orange hues and slightly staggering the spikes across the beanie.
  • Sew EXTRA SMALL SPIKES over Rows 4-6 on the RIGHT end of beanie (the FRONT)
  • Sew SMALL SPIKES over Rows 1-3 on the RIGHT end of the beanie (the FRONT)
  • Sew one set of MEDIUM SPIKES over Rows 1-3 on the LEFT end of the beanie (the BACK) and one set over Rows 9-11 on the LEFT end of the beanie (the BACK)
  • Sew one set of LARGE SPIKES over Rows 4-7 on the LEFT end of the beanie (the BACK)
• Sew spots around the body of the hat as you see fit!
