Turtle Beanie

Stitches used:

ch- chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

st – stitch

2dctog – YO, insert hook into first st, YO and pull through one loop, YO and pull through 2 loops, YO, insert hook into the next st, YO and pull through 2 loops, YO, and pull through the remaining 3 loops on the hook

BL – back loop

FL – front loop

Using size 4 yarn (worsted or medium weight yarn) with a J-10 (6.0 mm) needle in LIGHT GREEN (or color of your choice)

BEANIE (6.5” high and 15” flat diameter)

Ch 4 and loop to make a magic ring.

Row 1 (LIGHT GREEN) – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12 dc)

Row 2 (LIGHT GREEN) – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc) 

Row 3 (LIGHT GREEN) – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (36 dc)  Change to DARK GREEN

Row 4 (DARK GREEN) – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in same st as joining, dc in the next 3 st, then repeat {2 dc in the next st, dc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next st dc in the next 3 st} to the end.  Join with sl st to first dc (44 dc)

Row 5 (DARK GREEN) – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (44 dc)

Row 6 (DARK GREEN) – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), then {change to LIGHT GREEN and dc in the next 7 st, change to DARK GREEN and dc in the next 4 st} all the way around.  (44 dc)

Row 7-8 – repeat Row 6 (44 dc)

Row 9 (DARK GREEN) – working in the FL of Row 8, ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc. (44 dc)   Change to YELLOW.

Row 10 (YELLOW) – working in the BL of Row 8, ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in each st all the way around to the end. Join with sl st to first dc.  (44 dc)

Row 11 (YELLOW) – ch 1 (this counts as the first sc of the row), sc in each stitch all the way around to the end.  Join with sl st to the first sc and fasten off.  (44 sc)

LEGS (make 4)

Using LIGHT GREEN, ch 4 and loop to make a ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 5 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (6 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 5 dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewng.  (6 dc)

TAIL (make 1)

Using LIGHT GREEN, ch 4 and loop to make a ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 3 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (4 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 2 dc into the next st, dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  (6 dc)

Row 3 – ch 2 (this counts as the first dc of this row), 5 dc in each st all the way around.  Join with sl st to the first dc.  Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.  (6 dc)

FACE (make 1)

Using LIGHT GREEN, ch 4 and loop to make a ring.

Row 1 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row) and then 11 dc into the ring.  Join with sl st to first dc (12 dc)

Row 2 – ch 2 (this counts as your first dc of this row), dc in the same st as joining, and then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around to end.  Join with sl st to first dc. (24 dc) 

Row 3 – ch 1, 2dctog all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc.  (12 st)

Row 4 – ch 1, 2dctog all the way around.  Join with sl st to first dc.  Fasten off and leave the long tail for sewing.

Putting it together:

• Sew the face at the center of the beanie at Row 10, beneath Row 9.  Puffy paint the eyes and mouth
• Sew legs equidistant and symmetrical over Row 10, beneath Row 9, on each side of the face
• Sew the tail at the back of the beanie, directly behind the face, over Row 10m beneath Row 9.
